Lucy Winch has been a scientist and potter for over 23 years. Lucy will be teaching a 2-day glaze workshop for beginners, designed to give you all the skills and knowledge you need to confidently, and safely create your own glazes from raw materials.

The workshop will take you through the basics of glaze chemistry, delivered in an understandable way. You will cover the health and safety aspects surrounding glaze materials, be given step by step instructions on how to make your own glaze and discover how to adjust for colour and surface finish. You will use a range of different clays. learn how to adjust a recipe for firing temperature and come away with fired samples.

You will discuss different types of clay and different firing temperatures and atmospheres. As a group we will make some sample glazes together and make some test tiles that will be fired overnight in an electric kiln up to stoneware temperatures. On the second day, we will look at the glazes together and learn about the effects created.
